“What if all I have is enough?”
Within her new collection of paintings, artist, designer, and illustrator Meredith Schomburg prioritizes authenticity over perfection and turns limitations inside out to reveal opportunities for exploration, growth, and awe. Fabricated in just six days, these vibrant and layered works represent the abundancy mindset that Schomburg pursued as she made them. By starting with the materials she already had in her studio, and by framing the project in terms of time, these eight paintings were born out of the question: “what if all I have is enough?”

By tapping into the poeticism of the number “six” as it relates to the story of creation in the Biblical book of Genesis, Schomburg grounded herself in the concept that something beautiful could be created from very little. What began as an optimistic endeavor to embody the same level of trust and care started to wane half-way through the process. As the shadow of her self-enforced deadline loomed, she was forced to reckon with her own human limitations and recognize that what might appear easy for God is, humbly, often beyond our reach.

Days four, five, and six required patience in the midst of self-doubt, exhaustion, and despair brought on by outside circumstances. As Schomburg wrestled with preconceived notions of goodness, she opted for that fight to be on full display across these works. Play and discovery became vital elements, replacing the need for perfection and control, within the saturated shapes, figures, and colors.

In this way, the paintings in ‘Limited Addition’ are an animated prayer – part shout, part song – made visible. Created out of an attempt to understand how our humanity both restricts us and opens up new doors of opportunity and understanding, Schomburg’s work invites each viewer to ponder what’s possible, and what may be just enough.
